PREVENTION TREATMENT ACCESS PROJECT (PTAP):


The Latin American and Caribbean Council of AIDS Service Organizations, LACCASO, will implement this project in this region.  As in-country partner, Jamaica AIDS Support has been identified and the project will be planned and implemented locally based on specific gaps, needs, and opportunities.  The project will be situated within the guiding principles leading the response to HIV/AIDS today, among them:  The UNGASS Declaration of Commitment, the Millennium Development Goals, the Global Fund, The World Bank’s MAP Initiative, WHO’s 3 by 5 Initiative, and UNAIDS’s Three Ones.  The ICASO secretariat in Toronto, Canada will coordinate the project.

Annual Activity Report on PTAP
2006 has been paramount for the consolidation of project “Community Based Advocacy and Networking to Scale-up HIV Prevention in an Era of Expanded Treatment”. During this year, the bases were set for a coordinated partnership with our in-country partners, Alliance Against AIDS in Belize, and Jamaican AIDS Support for Life in Jamaica. The extensive skills-building activities are showing their results, and there is major understanding of the objectives of PTAP. Both partners have taken ownership of the project, and much enthusiasm is put into the development of activities. Download the file in PDF format

Forum on Sexual Health & New Prevention Technologies in HIV for Women
In April 25 to 26, 2008, a “Forum on sexual health and new prevention technologies in HIV for women” was piloted in Belize City, Belize by the Alliance Against AIDS and WIN Belize. This training was developed to respond to the specific psychosocial and structural factors and co-factors putting women at risk for HIV infection in Belize.  The aim of this pilot was to adapt a new psycho-educational initiative designed to address the long term sexual health concerns of women, for HIV prevention workers, community leaders and members.

Stigma and Discrimination: Barriers to Access Care and Treatment for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Belize City and Dangriga Town
The Alliance Against AIDS was established in 1997 and has since played a significant role in the advancement of the national response to HIV/AIDS in the country of Belize. With the support of the Latin American and Caribbean Council on AIDS Organizations (LACCASO), the AAA has embarked on a project to document how stigma and discrimination are barriers to care and treatment for People Living with HIV/ AIDS in Belize City and Dangriga Town. Rapid Assessment Update. Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Services in Belize
The AAA, with the support of the Latin American and Caribbean Council on AIDS Organizations (LACCASO), coordinated the establishment of a community based advocacy group. This community based group, the HIV and AIDS Stigma and Discrimination Advocacy Committee (HASDAC), though embryonic, has focused the collective efforts of its members on advocating for the strengthening of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services in Belize. Community Sector Involvement in Target Setting Process for Universal Access in Selected Countries: Demonstrating the Impact of Their Involvement. Belize Report
The Project comprises 3 phases, the first of which is Community Sector Involvement which is accompanied by a series of activities. The first activity in this phase is a country level community research that documents how the community sector was involved in the target setting processes for universal access in a number of countries. Belize was selected as one of the countries and this document represents the report on this research.

Baseline Study on Community Capacity Alliance Against AIDS & LACCASO. Belize City, Belize, April 22, 2008
Since the first case of AIDS in Belize in 1986, HIV/AIDS has affected individuals, couples, families, groups and communities across the country. In order to respond more effectively in the prevention, treatment and care of this disease, individuals, couples, families, groups and communities in Belize will need to develop individual and collective capacities to better address the challenges and opportunities that this chronic disease presents.
